The Daegu Art Museum hosts Yinka Shonibare MBE: Wilderness into a Garden, The Daegu Trilogy, and Youn Donghee, Discovered Memories to mark the 4th anniversary of its opening.

The museum has mounted three art shows: The Daegu Trilogythat brings together the works of Daegu-native artists; Yinka Shonibare MBE: Wilderness into a Garden, a special exhibition introducing the high profile world-class artist; and Youn Donghee, Discovered Memories, part of the Y Artist project to back up young and talented artists.

The Daegu Trilogy wasdesigned to promote Daegu art across the nation to further enhance its status with three artists representing the Daegu art scene.

The Daegu Trilogy is to be held from May 19(Tue.)to September 13(Sun.), 2015 and has been curated by guest curator Park Soyoung. Park has been in charge of numerous domestic exhibitions including Gangjeong Contemporary Art Festival 2012 and has been active in criticism and planning.

On show at the exhibition are 10 pieces including Wave of Mind, Awakening Moment-Drawing Space, Wave of Mind, Awakening Moment-Drawing Space, Practice –VariationandProject Zeroby Kim Ho Deuk (Korean-style painting), YiGee Chil (sculpture), and Kim Hee Seon (media installation) respectively.

Artist Kim Ho Deuk presents four works including Wind-Landscape (2015) and Wave of Mind, Awakening Moment-Drawing Space; artist YiGee Chil exhibits three works including The Space-Practice (2015) and The Practice of J. S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations (2015); and artist Kim Hee Seon displays three works includingHome (2009) and Project Zero 2 (2015).

Curator Park remarks “I am certain that our way of unfurling an independent exhibition of three artists under three episodes, which has been widely known in the central art scene, will draw attention,” adding that “This exhibition will be an example to show that ‘Daegu art today’ is none other than ‘Korean art today.’”

Yinka Shonibare MBE: Wilderness into a Gardenis the first large exhibition of British-born Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE (b. 1962, London) in Asia.

The exhibition of Yinka Shonibare, known to sarcastically represent African history under colonialism inflicted by Western imperialism, arouses laughter and deep resonance. His show in Korea is more meaningful as both countries share a similar history.

The exhibition brings together 87 works of sculpture, painting, installation, and video including one from his youth, Five Undergarments and Much More (1995), and his recent piece, High Tea (2015). These works will be exhibited at the UMI Hall and Gallery1from May 30 to October 18, 2015.

Hidden behind Shonibare’s hilarious, decorative works are numerous symbols and narratives. The key concepts of his work are historical duplicity and cultural hybridism. He extensively reviews history, literature, art history, and music history with the insight of humanities. Despite taking the main motifs of his work from Africa, the notions loaded in his subject matteruniversally reflect the times.

Exhibition Team Manager Kim Sukmo, responsible for curating the exhibition, commented that “Shonibare’s works arouse a deep resonance as they echo the political and social situations of East Asia including Korea. I hope the exhibition will serve as the momentum to promote his work’s artistic and historical value in Asia.”

The museum also presentsan exhibitionby a young up-and-coming young artistYoun Donghee.Discovered Memoriesin which his fresh sense stands out is an exhibition taking placefrom May 19 through October 4, 2015 at Gallery 4 and 5.

Youn Donghee (b. 1983, Daegu) chosen as the sixth artist for the Y Artist project following Lee Wan, Lee Hyein, Park Junghyunm Jung Jaehun, and Ahn Yujin is a young Daegu-based artist. He represents his crisscrossing perspectives of personal and grand history in performance, video and installation.

The exhibition introduces The Spirit (2012), addressing the scars of those sacrificed under the remarkable modernization of Korea and thehistorical recognitionon this. Also introduced are A Red Night (2013), dealing with the violence of a state ideology and Subdued Memories (2015), touching on social phenomena and oblivion in regard to the Sewol ferry disaster.

The Director Kim Sunheeof the museumstated that “The museum has mounted The Daegu Trilogy, the Youn Donghee exhibitionandthe large-scale exhibition of Yinka Shonibarewhohasbeen credited for hiswork’s value in Western societywith hiskeen thematic consciousness. The audience could not only feel the excellence of Daegu art through the exhibition of Daegu-born artists but also have the opportunity to experience the world ofcontemporary art through the exhibition of world-renowned artist Yinka Shonibare.”
