2021 is an exceptional year for both the Daegu Art Museum and the Korean Cultural Centre. We celebrate our special occasions: the Daegu Art Museum's 10th anniversary and the Korean Cultural Centre's 5th anniversary. Both organizations would like to strengthen cultural relations between the two countries by co-hosting an exhibition of modern Korean art in Canada while celebrating their respective anniversaries. In addition, this exhibit includes five rare works by LEE Insung and SEO Dongjin donated from the LEE Kun-hee Collection. These works are a part of the 21 pieces donated to Daegu Art Museum earlier this year from the private collection of the late Samsung Chairman LEE Kun-hee, who was a native to Daegu.
<Korean Modern Art: Daegu Scenery> presents works of three representative artists of modern Korean painting: LEE Insung, SEO Dongjin, and JEON Seontaek. With a focus on scenery paintings, most pieces displayed in this exhibition come from the Daegu Art Museum Collection, with some works loaned from private collectors. The exhibition aims to introduce modern Korean art to the Canadian audience by introducing its modern paintings and contemplating the meaning of scenery in the context of modern Korean history.
